Abstract
Topics discussed in this chapter include: human actions in the management of grazing lands; setting management goals; control and influence of the grazing process; managing competitive interactions within plant communities; defining the strategic role of derived pastures; establishing grazing systems; role of monitoring; and ecological processes. It is stressed that grazed ecosystems are generally complex and that the human decision-making process is an integral part of the ecosystem structure and function. Sustainability of grazed ecosystems into the future will require greater linkages between the human decision-making process, ecological processes, economic systems and political systems across several temporal and spatial scales.
