Abstract
. In the first word, the vowel of the internal syllable [p«n] iscompletely reduced (and can be deleted). In the second word, the corresponding syllable [dEn]maintains its full vowel. This difference is attributed to the difference in morphological structure:[ [ compensat ] ion ] vs. [ [ condens ] ation ]. In the inner cycle of the latter form, the stress iscondense. Hence, when -ation is added, the vowel of the syllable [dEn] is protected fromreduction—as it is in the base form
