Abstract
This report documents a primarily experimental and limited analytical research study on the effect of buckle arrestors on pipeline failure during pipelaying operation. Three types of buckle arrestors were studied. These are the grouted sleeve buckle arrestor, the heavy walled buckle arrestor, and the welded ring buckle arrestor. As these buckle arrestors move over rollers on the stinger, local stresses are produced which may damage the pipe. A small scale experimental study was conducted. The experimental results were used to explore appropriate limits on allowable tensile and compressive stresses near the buckle arrestors. The data suggests that the maximum strain in the pipe should not exceed 0.5 percent.
