Guillain-Barré症候群（GBS）と慢性炎症性脱髄性多発根ニューロパチー（CIDP）は，末梢神経を標的とする自己免疫疾患であり，GBSは急性単相性の，CIDPは慢性の経過をとる．どちらにも各種の亜型が存在する．治療として，経静脈的免疫グロブリン療法と血漿浄化療法はどちらにも有効であるが，副腎皮質ステロイド薬はCIDPには有効であるがGBSには単独での有効性は否定されている．またこれらの治療で十分な効果の得られない症例に対する新規治療の試みも報告されている．
