Abstract

Congress has mandated use of a prospective payment system to pay for Medicare patient stays at inpatient rehabilitation facilities and that changes in payment amounts should accurately reflect changes in patient case mix-the true cost of treating patients-and not be influenced by changes in coding practices. This report analyzes case mix during 2002 and compares it with case mix under the old system in 1999.
