Abstract

A 12 percent reduction in energy consumption saved Talon $200,000 last year, while another 9.5 percent planned for the present year will exhaust low-capital housekeeping measures. Further energy savings will require capital expenditures for monitoring and engineering equipment, such as timing devices to reduce peak loads. Talon's conservation program centers on a formal system of plant energy managers and committees to set goals and policies and then report to the energy management coordinator. Fuel prices and availability are monitored continuously to determine when alternative fuels should be used. Other techniques avoid electric power demand at peak periods, insulate windows and eliminate northern exposure windows, and replace conventional warehouse lights with high-pressure sodium and mercury vapor lights. A request for ERDA funds to test solar water heating in Talon's dye house was not approved. (DCK)
