A discussion of gender and sexual identity in fiction

Abstract
A close examination of the representation of gender and sexual identity within fiction, closely analysing two novels in addition to a wealth of secondary material. The work of Judith Butler is the primary research used to formulate this discussion, and allows this essay to reconstruct preconceived ideas about gender identity and its place in fiction and wider society. This essay also critically assesses my own creative artefact, which is a social examination of the representation of gender and sexuality in contemporary culture, in relation to other works.
