Abstract
This paper synthesizes the estimated values of forests in the Mediterranean Region, drawing from the results of case studies from countries in the region. Cross-country comparisons among the estimates and valuation methods used in each country are described and presents aggregated estimates at the subregional and Mediterranean level. The different direct use values include: wood forest products (timber and firewood, wood removals and standing timber); grazing; non-wood forest products (cork, mushrooms, honey and other products); recreation, landscape, tourism and hunting. On the other hand, indirect use values are water-related services; and carbon sequestration. Also described are the benefits derived from the forest such as biodiversity conservation and the pharmaceutical value of various forest resources.
