of the Physics Department. In particular, I wish to acknowledge the help of my thesis director, Professor Peter Axel, who suggested the problems and helped its progress In many ways. The design and construction of the magnetic shield for the thin lens spectrograph was done by Dr. Robert Stump. Most of the calculations of pulse distribution in thick crystals were done by Mr. Robert Baer. The well-organized service groups in the Physics Department were of inestimable aid in this work.In particular, I wish to acknowledge the great help rendered by the Electronics Shop, the Machine Shop, the Purchasing Department, and the Chemistry group.Of this last group, Mr. M. Glaubman crystallized the anthracene used and Mr. H.Petree purified the cerium used in the experiment described in Chapter IV.
