Abstract

Abstract Opium is obtained from the unripe seed capsules of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. It contains 25 to 30 alkaloids. Commercially, morphine, narcotine (noscapine), papaverine, thebaine, codeine, and narceine are considered the most important of these alkaloids.
