Abstract
The UK has seen significant growth in rail freight over the last 20 years and forecasts suggest a doubling of rail freight volumes by 2043, which will significantly boost the economy. This article discusses the importance of government’s role in supporting the rail freight industry. The author highlights particular areas of focus that will be critical as the industry evolves, including passenger and freight capacity, road and rail integration and rail freight’s charging framework.
