Abstract
Kerosine based jet fuel constitutes the bulk of aviation's demand for petroleum. Yet the U.S. Air Force maintained a preference in past years for gasoline/naphtha based jet fuels (JP-4). A few years ago, the Air Force initiated a program to convert them from JP-4 to a kerosine based fuel (JP-8 or JP-5) at off of its overseas bases. Recently, it completed an evaluation of converting its domestic-based aircraft to JP-8 as well. This article describes what JP-8 is, how it compares with other jet fuels and its potential domestic availability.
