Abstract
In California, local government, independent transit agencies and the state are all attempting to work together to develop a safe, efficient rail transit system while still maintaining maximum traffic operational efficiency. Efforts in the transit/traffic interface area are currently under way to: (1) Revise existing state regulations of overall transit design, construction and operation of transit systems; (2) Revise existing state regulations of railroad warning and traffic control devices to account for the multitude of transit operational schemes and their individual characteristics; (3) Standardize the use of traffic control devices including signals, signs and pavement markings; (4) Develop non-standard approaches to respond to traffic delays at transit near-side stations.
