Discussion on germplasm innovation and breeding breakthrough varieties in sugarcane

Germplasm innovation in sugarcane could be summed up as following aspects:parental improvement,creation of new parental materials and exploiting new independent germplasm by wide cross.According to the practices and history of sugarcane breeding,the whole course of sexual hybridization could be divided into two stages of improvement and breakthrough.Sugarcane breeding reached a plateau for about half a century,the reasons and measures of making breakthrough were discussed in the paper.
