Abstract
Suddenly the middle of the barrel has become more important in the hydrocarbon fuels industry. The military are examining the possibilities of decreasing jet fuel volatility while projected diesel exhaust emission standards dictate not only redesigned diesel engines but improved diesel fuels as well. The authors discuss how for jet fuels, they may need to remove naphtha thus reducing overall production; and also to augment some quality aspects. Whereas, for diesel fuel the problem is improving combustion characteristics such that particulate matter is significantly reduced. Production of kerosene and diesel oils, over those fractions present in crude oil, will require similar feed stocks. The processing of atmospheric gas oils, vacuum gas oils and FCC cycle oils and their relative yields of kerosene and diesel products need to be examined according to this analysis.
