Abstract
Carnivores detected by night survey in Aragon The relative abundance of the observed carnivores, as well as their presence or absence, has been extracted from the information contained in the Monitoring Plan of Mammals of the Diputacion General de Aragon. This plan’s original objective is the monitoring of game species. The above mentioned plan has completed till now 1,930 nocturnal surveys, carried out in 71 Aragonese localities during the winters of 1992 through 1999 with a total coverage of 55,818 kilometers. The fox (Vulpes vulpes) has been the most frequently detected carnivore (observed in 100% of the localities) as well as the most abundant (86.2 sightings per 1000 kilometers). Wildcat (Felis silvestris, 45.7%, 1.1), domestic cat (Felis catus, 42.2%, 3.1), stone marten (Martes foina, 40.8%, 1.2), feral dog (Canis familiaris, 36.6%, 2.4), badger (Meles meles, 33.8%, 1.3), common genet (Genetta genetta, 19.7%, 0.6), weasel (Mustela nivalis, 5.6%, 0.07) and pine marten (Martes martes, 2.8%, 0.14), were also observed
